Moirabari College

GEOGRAPHY DEPARTMENT

Profile

The first initiative to introduce the subject of geography at Moirabari College was taken by Md. Abdul Mannan in 1989. On September 11, 1989, Md. Mannan started the H.S. 1st Year course with only 11 students. The journey of the department was initiated at this point. After that, Md. Mannan started the Three-Year Degree Course (TDC) in 1993 with only seven students. In the same year, he applied for university permission to run the TDC course and received it in 1994. At the same time, Md. Mannan applied for government concurrence for B.A. 1st year, which was also received in March 1995. Md. Mannan, making no delay, applied for university affiliation for Part I and Part II, which were also received in 1996. But unfortunately, the subject could not find its place in the requisition list announced by the college in May 1996. In 1997, Prof. Taizuddin Ahmed was appointed by the college authority, though he had been working in the department since 1996 as an honorary service provider. After two years in 1999, the college authority appointed Prof. Mala Moni Kalita to the department, though she had been giving honorary service to the department since December 2, 1997. In 2000, Md. Abul Hussain was appointed as Laboratory Bearer of the department. The department started its major course in 2002, and after a long struggle, Md. Abdul Mannan was acknowledged as an assistant professor from the higher education side in 2015. Similarly, the same recognition was given to Prof. Taizuddin Ahmed and Prof. Mala Moni Kalita in 2018. In January 2019, Prof. Bikashita Kalita was appointed by the college authority. With three faculty members and one lab bearer, the department was on a successful journey. In the middle of the journey, Md. Abdul Mannan, the founder of the department, retired on September 30, 2022. In place of him, Dr. Sameer Baruah was appointed by the Higher Education Department on June 1, 2023.
